Additional Information About Purple Diamond Loropetalum

Loropetalum Chinense 'Purple Diamond® Shang-hi' PP18331' is a moderate growing shrub that can be grown in USDA Plant Hardiness Zones 7A through 10B. It matures to an average height of 4 feet to 5 feet and an average width of 4 feet to 6 feet, depending on climate and other environmental factors. It prefers growing in a location that provides full sun, morning sun with afternoon shade or morning shade with afternoon sun and grows best when planted in sand, loam, clay or silt soil that is well drained. In the spring and fall Purple Diamond Loropetalum produces pink flowers. The foliage is purple in color. It attracts visual attention and is resistant to deer, drought, insects, diseases, mildew and heat.

Purple Diamond Loropetalum can be useful in the landscape along woodland borders, in mass plantings, in foundation plantings, in containers or planters, in shrub borders, around decks, swimming pools, and other outdoor living areas, as an accent, as a focal point, in landscape beds or islands or to add property value and also in rock or xeriscape gardens, theme gardens or perennial gardens.

More about Purple Diamond Loropetalum...

Noteworthy Characteristics

Purple Diamond Loropetalum boasts the most intense purple foliage color of any plant on the market! Vibrant pink, witchhazel-like, fringy flowers are heavy in spring, appear occasionally in summer, and again in fall. The foliage provides a stunning contrast with the bright pink flowers. Mature height is about 4 to 5 feet with an equal spread. It can be pruned or sheared year-round for a more formal shape or to limit size.

Uses

Purple Diamond Loropetalum is useful as a foundation plant, a colorful low hedge, an accent, or in small to large groupings in landscape beds.

Culture

Purple Diamond Loropetalum is easy to grow and low maintance. Plant it in locations that provide well-drained soils and full sun to part shade. In our trial gardens, we've had Purple Diamond growing in sites that provide anywhere from full sun to half a days shade. It grows a little fuller and foliage color is a little more intense with more sun. Though not picky about soil type, well drained soil is essential for this plant. Pruning is minimal unless you want to shear it into a more formal shape.

I ordered 6 shrubs in late October for my home in NC. I planted them the first week in November and lost 1 over this very rough winter. Will be sure not to wait so long in the season next time. The rest are looking good this spring. I paired with lemon ball plants on a retainer wall beside my pool.

My original loropetalums were damaged by severe cold temperatures. They were in half barrels and the soil probably was colder than in the ground. These Purple Diamonds are one of my favorite plants so I will take steps to make sure it doesnt happen again. The plants arrived in perfect condition - nice packing.
