Liriope Muscari 'Monroe White' is a moderate growing groundcover plant, ornamental grass and perennial plant that can be grown in USDA Plant Hardiness Zones 6A through 11. It matures to an average height of 1 foot to 2 feet and an average width of 1 foot to 2 feet, depending on climate and other environmental factors. It prefers growing in a location that provides shade, morning sun with afternoon shade or filtered sun and grows best when planted in loam, clay or silt soil that is well drained. In the summer Monroe White Liriope produces white flowers. The foliage is dark green in color. It attracts butterflies, hummingbirds, visual attention and songbirds / birds and is resistant to deer, drought, insects, mildew and heat.
Monroe White Liriope can be useful in the landscape along woodland borders, in mass plantings, in foundation plantings, in containers or planters, as a border or edger, under a shade tree, as a groundcover, as a focal point, in landscape beds or islands or for erosion control and also in theme gardens, cottage gardens or shade gardens.
A classic but lesser known Liriope, Monroe White sports evergreen tufts of arching, grass-like green foliage, 12 to15 inches tall, for either shade or sun, however some afternoon shade in hotter climates is appreciated. Gleaming, long white bloom panicles in late summer or early fall are followed by shiny black berries, adding more interest to the garden.
This striking plant makes an exquisite specimen or ground cover, and is indispensable to formal plantings, pathways, and other parts of the garden where uniform edging is called for.
Liriope is very easy to grow and needs little care to keep it looking its best. It is not picky about soil type but prefers a well-drained evenly moist soil. That being said, when established it is exceptionally drought tolerant. It will tolerate full sun however performs best with some filtered sun or shade during the hottest part of the day. In early spring, cut back the old foliage before the new growth starts to emerge.
One of the easiest groundcovers, edgings, or container choices you'll ever grow!
