This is the fun part! There are lots of Muscadine varieties to choose from - each offers fruit with its own, truly unique attributes. Among these are: 'Size', 'Color', 'Soluble Sugar%', is a 'Pollinator' required for fertilization/fruiting, typical 'Ripening' period, and more. What really should determine which muscadine varieties you choose is what 'Uses' you have planned for them. Why not plant an assortment of Early-Mid-Late season varieties, and extend your muscadine harvest season? Keep in mind, there are two different types of muscadines: 1) 'Self-Fertile' types - which are self-pollinating, and 2) 'Self-Sterile' (female) types - which must be planted in close proximity to 'Self-Fertile' types in order to produce fruit. With just a little homework, you can select the perfect muscadine varieties for your garden - click the link below to use the Muscadine Variety Information Sheet to help make your selections.
'Bountiful' is a great tasting, black muscadine that ripens later than many of the other muscadine varieties. It is a self-fertile variety that will provide delicious fruit from the late Summer through the early Fall. Bountiful muscadines are usually smaller in size than many of the other varieties - but what it lacks in size, it more than makes up for with its excellent flavor, good disease resistance, and dry stem scar - which helps improve its post-harvest, storage/shelf-life.
