Additional Information About Lithodora diffusa 'Grace Ward' - Grace Ward Lithodora

Lithodora Diffusa 'Grace Ward' is a slow and moderate growing groundcover plant and perennial plant that can be grown in USDA Plant Hardiness Zones 5A through 8A. It matures to an average height of 1 inch to 1 foot and an average width of 1 foot to 2 feet, depending on climate and other environmental factors. It prefers growing in a location that provides full sun, morning sun with afternoon shade or morning shade with afternoon sun and grows best when planted in sand, loam, clay or silt soil that is well drained. In the spring Grace Ward Lithodora produces bright blue flowers. The foliage is dark green in color.

Grace Ward Lithodora can be useful in the landscape in mass plantings, in foundation plantings, in containers or planters, as a border or edger, as a groundcover, in landscape beds or islands, to accentuate entryways or in small groupings and also in rock or xeriscape gardens, theme gardens or perennial gardens.

More About Grace Ward Lithodora...

Grace Ward Lithodora is a choice groundcover or rock garden plant, making an unforgettable display with it's very pretty, intense sapphire-blue, star-shape flowers that cover the grey-green evergreen foliage. The flowers start to appear as early as March, becoming covered in flowers in May and June, continuing to bloom at intervals up to the first frost in fall.

The plant forms a low, dense, creeping mat that makes it a perfect selection as an edger or in rock gardens. Full sun is best however the plant will tolerate a fair amount of shade, which is beneficial in hotter, Southern climates. Well-drained, soil is a must for optimum performance. Slighty acidic soil is preferred but the plant is not too fussy about pH. Heavy clay soils should be amended well to improve drainage. In colder regions Lithodora will benefit from a light covering of evergreen boughs or straw-type mulch as soon as the soil is frozen in late fall.

Though it can spread quickly to 2 feet wide and maybe even 6 feet or so over time, Grace Ward Lithodora is very low maintenance requiring little or no pruning. It can be cut back a little after flowering to freshen the foliage if needed. In our trial gardens it has shown very good resistance to insects, disease, drought, and deer.

Perfect companions are Hens & Chicks, Sedums, Barberry, and Loropetalum.
