Liriope Muscari 'Variegata' is a moderate growing groundcover plant that can be grown in USDA Plant Hardiness Zones 6A through 10B. It matures to an average height of 1 inch to 1 foot and an average width of 6 inches to 1 foot, depending on climate and other environmental factors. It prefers growing in a location that provides full sun, shade, morning sun with afternoon shade, morning shade with afternoon sun or filtered sun and grows best when planted in sand, loam, clay or silt soil that is well drained. In the summer Variegated Liriope produces violet flowers. The foliage is white in color. It attracts butterflies, hummingbirds, visual attention and songbirds / birds and is resistant to deer, drought, insects, diseases and heat.
Variegated Liriope can be useful in the landscape in mass plantings, in foundation plantings, in containers or planters, as a border or edger, around decks, swimming pools, and other outdoor living areas, as an accent, under a shade tree, as a groundcover, in hanging baskets or in landscape beds or islands and also in rock or xeriscape gardens, theme gardens, cottage gardens, butterfly gardens or hummingbird gardens.
This is one tough plant you almost cannot kill. Stomp on it, drive over it with your car, cut it back to the ground...heck, we've even accidentally sprayed it with RoundUp and it didn't die! That being said, we don't advise spraying it with any herbicides.
The attractive grassy leaves are dark green striped vertically with white or a creamy yellow margins. Lilac-lavender flower spikes resembling hyacinths rise above the clumps of grass-like foliage in summer, adding extra appeal.
Unlike other Liriopes that will wildly spread where they are not wanted, 'Variegata' forms neat clumps which gradually increase in size over time. No runners popping up 2 feet away from the plant!
Its neat clump-forming habit make 'Variegata' a perfect choice for bordering sidewalks or the perimiters of garden beds or in mass as a groundcover under small or large trees.
Vearigated Lirope will grow in almost any type of average garden soil, preferring loose, well-drained but moist soils. It will tolerate shade however produces the best color with more sun.
If you are looking for a long-lived, excetionally tough border plant or groundcover, Variegated Liriope is a hard one to beat.
