It matures to an average height of 30 feet to 40 feet and an average width of 10 feet to 15 feet, depending on climate and other environmental factors. It prefers growing in a location that provides full sun or morning shade with afternoon sun and grows best when planted in sand or clay soil that is well drained. It attracts wildlife, visual attention and songbirds / birds and is resistant to deer and insects. If you like fragrance, Leyland Cypress has fragrant foliage.
Leyland Cypress can be useful in the landscape in foundation plantings, as a buffer or screen, as a background, around decks, swimming pools, and other outdoor living areas, to provide shade, as a focal point, in landscape beds or islands, to frame the corners of a home or other building, to add property value or in small groupings and also in theme gardens.
Noteworthy Characteristics
Leyland Cypress has become one of the most popular evergreen privacy tree's over the past 20 years. A very fast grower to 30-40' tall and 8-12' wide. It is popular for its formal, conical shape and its ability to establish a quick privacy screen or buffer.
Uses
The Leyland Cypress is primarily used to form a quick tall screen or buffer but can also be useful as a specimen or an outdoor Christmas tree.
Culture
Leyland Cypress is easy to grow in well-drained soil and full sun. Provide water during prolonged summer dry periods. Though it never requires pruning to keep it's shape, Leyland Cypress can be sheared if a more formal shape is desired.
NOTE: To prevent disease caused by trapped heat and humidity make sure to space your Leyland Cypress properly when planting in rows. We recommend a minimum on-center spacing of 8 feet. This means 8 feet from the center or trunk of one plant to the center of the next plant in the row.
