Nandina Domestica 'Murasaki' PP21391' is a moderate growing shrub and groundcover plant that can be grown in USDA Plant Hardiness Zones 6A through 11. It matures to an average height of 1 foot to 2 feet and an average width of 1 foot to 2 feet, depending on climate and other environmental factors. It prefers growing in a location that provides full sun, shade, morning sun with afternoon shade, morning shade with afternoon sun or filtered sun and grows best when planted in sand, loam, clay or silt soil that is well drained. In the spring Flirt Nandina produces white flowers. The foliage is blue green, red and dark green in color. It attracts wildlife, visual attention and songbirds / birds and is resistant to deer, drought, insects, diseases, mildew and heat.
Flirt Nandina can be useful in the landscape along woodland borders, in mass plantings, in foundation plantings, in containers or planters, as a border or edger, in shrub borders, around decks, swimming pools, and other outdoor living areas, as an accent, under a shade tree or as a groundcover and also in rock or xeriscape gardens, theme gardens, cottage gardens, perennial gardens or shade gardens.
Noteworthy Characteristics
The foliage of Nandina turns red only during the winter, right? Well, not anymore...at least not with the new Flirt™ Dwarf Nandina. Unlike Harbour Dwarf Nandina, which is green throughout the warm season and goes to red in winter, Flirt™ Dwarf, a sport of Harbour Dwarf, produces stunning red new growth during the spring, summer and fall! Then, druing winter it goes almost completely red. So now you can have splashes of outstanding red color year round in the landscape! In spring, pretty panicles of white flowers rise above and contrast wonderfully with the red foliage. Unlike other flowering and berry-producing nandinas, the berries/seeds produced by Flirt™ Dwarf are sterile, making it a safe choice as it will not spread from seed.
Uses
When spaced 24 inches apart plants will fill in nicely to form a soft-textured patch in the garden, making it a perfect choice for underplanting small trees such as Dogwoods, Redbuds or upright Japanese Maples, and Crape Myrtles.
Culture & Care Tips
As with other Nandina, Flirt™ Dwarf is exceptionally drought, heat, cold and humidity tolerant. Through experimenting with Flirt™ Dwarf in our trial gardens we've found that it does equally as well in full sun or partial shade. We've used Flirt™ Dwarf in both shady and sunny areas of our gardens. Well-drained soil is a must!
This shrub is hard to find but well worth the price. Shipped right away and packaged so it was not damaged in transit which is often a problem with other companies.
