Isotoma Axillaris 'Blue Stars' is a moderate growing groundcover plant and perennial plant that can be grown in USDA Plant Hardiness Zones 5A through 9B. It prefers growing in a location that provides full sun, morning sun with afternoon shade or morning shade with afternoon sun and grows best when planted in loam, clay or silt soil that is well drained.
Blue Star Creeper can be useful in the landscape in mass plantings, in foundation plantings, in containers or planters, as a border or edger, as a groundcover, between stepping stones and pavers, as a lawn substitute, in landscape beds or islands, to accentuate entryways or in small groupings and also in rock or xeriscape gardens or theme gardens.
We use the Blue Star Creeper extensively in our gardens between the gaps of stepping stones in paths, where it serves to be a very tough "stepable" that is tolerant to moderate foot trafffic (3 to 4 times a day). We also use it as a groundcover to underplant shrubs, roses, and small trees, such as laceleaf Japanese maples, and in shade gardens around ferns and other perennials.
Masses of tiny, star-shape, blue flowers nearly cover the evergreen foliage in spring and then are produced sporadically until the first frost in fall. The foliage is evergreen in warmer climates and semi-evergreen in cooler climates.
Blue Star Creeper will tolerate full sun if the soil remains consistently moist. Otherwise, it is more suited to sites that provide morning sun with afternoon shade or dappled sunlight. Either way, it's best not to allow the soil to completely dry out for prolonged periods of time.
When planting in narrow spaces between stepping stones or pavers you can divide the plant into parts that will fit the gaps.
