Additional Information About Fragrant Orange Tea Olive - Osmanthus fragrans aurantiacus

Osmanthus Fragrans 'Aurantiacus' is a moderate growing shrub and tree that can be grown in USDA Plant Hardiness Zones 7B through 10B. It matures to an average height of 8 feet to 15 feet and an average width of 6 feet to 8 feet, depending on climate and other environmental factors. It prefers growing in a location that provides full sun or morning shade with afternoon sun and grows best when planted in sand, loam, clay or silt soil that is well drained. In the fall Orange Tea Olive produces bright orange flowers. The foliage is dark green in color. If you like fragrance, Osmanthus Fragrans 'Aurantiacus' has fragrant flowers.

Orange Tea Olive can be useful in the landscape in foundation plantings, as a background, in shrub borders, around decks, swimming pools, and other outdoor living areas, in landscape beds or islands, grown flat against a wall or as a hedge and also in theme gardens or cottage gardens.

More about the Fragrant Orange Tea Olive...

Noteworthy Characteristics

A cousin of the white-flowering Tea Olive, Osmanthus fragrans, the Orange Tea Olive, Osmanthus aurantiaicus, produces the same fragrant flowers but in a wonderful creamy orange color! There are other subtle differences between the two varieties. The Orange Tea Olive is more cold hardy, growing as far north as USDA Zone 7a, however, it blooms only in the fall and not in both spring and fall as the white form does. Both have dark green foliage but the Orange Tea Olive is a little darker green. Also, some say that the Orange Teal Oive has a more pleasant fragrance due to the presence of carotenes in the flowers. It does smell a little sweeter, like candy. But we love them both! The flowers of the Orange Tea Olive are edible and also used in perfumes. In China, they use the flowers to scent black or green teas and also use it in perfumery. You'll see why when you plant one!

Uses

A breeze will carry the aroma a good distance, but we suggest planting your Tea Olive near windows and outdoor living areas. This way you can enjoy the fragrance from close up. Tea Olives can be useful as a single specimen shrub or small tree, in groupings, in flowering shrub borders, as a natural hedge, visual screen or wind and noise buffer, to frame corners in home foundation plantings,or in fragrance or cottage gardens

Culture & Care Tips

The Orange Tea Olive is an exceptionally easy plant to grow in most any average well-drained soil. It prefers full sun but will tolerate a little shade. Once established it is quite drought tolerant. It has very few if any insect or disease problems and deer don't touch it!

I bought three of these and they are all doing well. Waited about a month to plant them and dug the hole 3x the diameter of the root ball. Root ball was mostly mulch so I was a bit concerned about its lack of structure when planted. But they showed no ill effects/shock and in fact, have grown about 1/2 foot since planting about a month ago. Looking forward to the fragrant orange flowers blossoming in the fall.

Great service & product, again.

This is the second time in several years that I am purchasing orange osmanthus bushes from Gardener Direct. The customer service is always very good and the people are all very helpful pre and post purchase. I have refered many to GD but their states don't allow certain plants. I highly recommend Matt and his crew, they care about their products and they care about their customers.

Reply from Gardener Direct:

Thank you for your kind words and business Joyce! Let me know if there is anything I can do for you. - Matt

I received a beautiful robust plant that took off without any problems. It is too early for the blooms, but I hope to see them this fall. Excellent quality!
