Additional Information About Bar Harbor Juniper

Juniperus Horizontalis 'Bar Harbor' is a fast growing groundcover plant and cone bearing plant that can be grown in USDA Plant Hardiness Zones 3A through 9B. It matures to an average height of 1 inch to 1 foot and an average width of 4 feet to 6 feet, depending on climate and other environmental factors. It prefers growing in a location that provides full sun and grows best when planted in sand, loam, clay or silt soil that is well drained. It attracts visual attention and is resistant to deer, drought, insects, diseases, foot traffic and heat. If you like fragrance, Juniperus Horizontalis 'Bar Harbor' has fragrant foliage.

Bar Harbor Juniper can be useful in the landscape in mass plantings, in foundation plantings, as a border or edger, around decks, swimming pools, and other outdoor living areas, as a groundcover, for topiary, in landscape beds or islands, for erosion control, to accentuate entryways or in small groupings and also in rock or xeriscape gardens or theme gardens.

More about Bar Harbor Juniper...

This is our favorite among the low-growing, spreading Juniper groundcovers. Bar Harbor is a dense, mat forming evergreen ground cover; one of the lowest growing of the junipers at 6 inches height. The handsome, dark blue-green, feathery foliage spreads quite rapidly to 6 to 8 feet in width and turns a attractive, silvery plum-purple color during winter. Unlike some other low-growing spreading junipers, Bar Harbor grows uphill as well as downhill on slopes.

Bar Harbor is an excellent choice for groundcover on sunny slopes and embankments or as a border in landscape beds and islands. It will also spill over walls and is a great choice to underplant small trees such as Japanese maple and crape myrtle.

I bought these low growing junipers for planters on my balcony (9th Floor) with north and west exposure. They have survived the winter and are now starting to put on new growth. So far perfect for the spot!
