Additional Information About Snow White Indian Hawthorne

Raphiolepis Indica 'Snow White' is a moderate growing shrub that can be grown in USDA Plant Hardiness Zones 7A through 11. It matures to an average height of 3 feet to 4 feet and an average width of 4 feet to 6 feet, depending on climate and other environmental factors. It prefers growing in a location that provides full sun, morning sun with afternoon shade or morning shade with afternoon sun and grows best when planted in sand, loam, clay or silt soil that is well drained. In the spring Snow White Indian Hawthorne produces white flowers. The foliage is blue green and dark green in color. It attracts songbirds / birds and is resistant to drought, insects, diseases and heat.

Snow White Indian Hawthorne can be useful in the landscape along woodland borders, in mass plantings, in foundation plantings, in shrub borders, around decks, swimming pools, and other outdoor living areas, as a focal point, in landscape beds or islands, for erosion control, to accentuate entryways or in small groupings and also in rock or xeriscape gardens or theme gardens.

Noteworthy Characteristics

Don't let anyone tell you that there is a better Dwarf Indian Hawthorne on the market. Since the early 1980's we've tried them all and Snow White stands out as the most hardy and reliable of all Raphiolepis. It's a great alternative to azaleas where there's too much sun. The olive green foliage becomes covered in pure white flowers during spring and new growth is an attractive reddish-bronze color. We've seen absolutely no problems with leaf spot in the South and humid regions...and we can't say that about any other variety. It keeps it's low, dense form with no pruning or shearing and has tolerated temperatures below 5 degrees F in our gardens with no damage at all.

Snow White Indian Hawthorne grows 3 to 4 feet tall with a 5 to 6 foot spread making it an excellent selection for foundation plantings, in shrub borders, on slopes for erosion control, or as a natural or formal hedge.

Snow White Indian Hawthorne is easy to grow and low maintenance. It is super drought tolerant when established. Plant in locations that provide very well-drained soil and full sun to part sun. Constantly soggy soil can lead to root rot and leaf spot. Avoid overwatering this plant. During the first growing season, water only enough to keep soil damp, but not wet. After the first year, this plant should rarely need supplemental irrigation. Pruning is not required however can be done after bloom to maintain a formal shape. Cease pruning two months prior to the first typical frost date in your area.
