More about the Fragrant Tea Olive...
The Fragrant Tea Olive, Osmanthus fragrans, also known as the Sweet Olive, is a large evergreen shrub or small tree that produces copious amounts of the most wonderfully fragrant flowers in existence. The flowers are tiny but boy do they pack a punch! All it takes is one Tea Olive to fill the front or backyard with a heavenly scent of perfume. The scent is really indescribable. No other fragrant plant we know of smells like the Tea Olive. It's just one of those things you have to experience for yourself. The flowers are produced in both spring and fall, whenever the nightime temperatures are between about 40 to 60 degrees. In our gardens here in mid-Georgia, this means about 2 to 4 months out of the year, depending on how the weather goes.
A breeze will carry the aroma a good distance, but we suggest planting your Tea Olive near windows and outdoor living areas. This way you can enjoy the fragrance from close up. Tea Olives can be useful as a single specimen shrub or small tree, in groupings, in flowering shrub borders, as a natural hedge, visual screen or wind and noise buffer, to frame corners in home foundation plantings,or in fragrance or cottage gardens
Culture & Care Tips
The Tea Olive is an exceptionally easy plant to grow in most any average well-drained soil. It prefers full sun but will tolerate a little shade. Once established it is quite drought tolerant. It has very few if any insect or disease problems and deer don't touch it!
