Noteworthy Characteristics

'Vintage Gold' is a slow-growing, compact, dwarf form of Sawara cypress that has stunning, golden-yellow, fern-like foliage that holds its color well throughout the season. This new introduction was found by Greg Stropkey at his Seven Springs Nursery in Painesville, Ohio. It was discovered as a sport on Chamaecyparis ‘Golden Mop’. Greg says he was out walking through his nursery fields one day when noticed one of the "mops" had a distinctly different look. He liked the soft, ferny foliage, so he took some cuttings and began to develop this impressive new variety. Some sources say 5-7 feet in height with a 2-3 foot spread, which would make it an upright with pyramidal form. Others say anywhere from 2 to 5 feet in height with equal spread and a mounding form. Either way, the foliage sure is a standout in our gardens and so far it looks like it will have a pyramidal form similar to that of its parent: 'Gold Mops', only with foliage that looks more ferny like a 'Crippsii' cypress.

Uses

Accent, Single Specimen, Small Groups, Foundation Plantings, Asian Theme Gardens, Containers

Culture

Easy to grow in average, well-drained soils in full sun to part shade. Best golden foliage color in full sun. Prefers moist, fertile soils. As with many other ornamental plants wet, poorly drained soils can cause problems with the roots that lead to disease or death of the plant. Shelter from wind.
