Chasmanthium Latifolium 'River Mist' is a fast growing ornamental grass and perennial plant that can be grown in USDA Plant Hardiness Zones 4A through 9B. It matures to an average height of 2 feet to 3 feet and an average width of 1 foot to 2 feet, depending on climate and other environmental factors. It prefers growing in a location that provides full sun, shade, morning sun with afternoon shade, morning shade with afternoon sun or filtered sun and grows best when planted in sand, loam, clay or silt soil that is well drained or moderately drained. In the summer and fall River Mist Northern Sea Oats produces cream, white and light green flowers. The foliage is white, medium green and dark green in color. It attracts wildlife, visual attention and songbirds / birds and is resistant to deer, drought, insects, diseases, mildew, heat and salty soil and/or spray.
River Mist Northern Sea Oats can be useful in the landscape along woodland borders, in mass plantings, in containers or planters, as an accent or in landscape beds or islands and also in theme gardens, perennial gardens or shade gardens.
'River Mist' is a new Northern Sea Oats that provides a striking green and white striped bamboo-like foliage which is second to none! What's really neat about this plant is that you can plant it in full sun or in shade, where it really brightens up the garden combining perfectly with hostas, heuchera, and ferns. The plant can grow to about 3 feet tall with an equal spread. In late summer, silvery green, oat-like seed heads are produced on arching stems, looking especially lovely when backed by morning or evening sunlight. The seeds turn copper in the fall and make an interesting addition to cut flower bouquets.
Variegated Northern Sea Oats is native to the wooded slopes and damp forests of southeastern North America, from Texas north to Pennsylvania and New Jersey. It is a clumping grass that is treasured for its showy, drooping flowers and unique bamboo-like foliage. It is a unique plant that provides a vivid look to any garden.
