More about Mysore Raspberry...

Mysore (aka Snowpeaks, Ceylon, Black, Indian, or Hill) raspberry species, Rubus niveus, is native of Burma/India, specifically to the lower Himalayas. It was eventually introduced to E.Africa/Kenya, and in 1948, its seeds were supplied to the University of Florida's Agricultural  Research and Education Center. Plants were propegated and widely distributed, and by the mid-1950's, Mysore berries could be found and purchased at many of Florida's markets/produce outlets. Mysore is a large, everbearing shrub, and can achieve 15'+ heights under ideal conditions. For heaviest yields, some afternoon shade is best, and pruning to discourage spring/summer flowering is recommended. December flowering is ideal for fruit to develop and ripen ~ February thru May/June, and will provide for larger number/size of berries. Fruit turns from red to purple, and then black when ripe - clusters can contain more than a dozen ripe, very pleasant black raspberries, and the seeds found in the Mysore berries are small, and not objectionable. Mysore has been grown successfully in mountainous regions (up to10,000 ft. elevation), and it is one of very few raspberries able to grow at lower elevations, like those found in the tropics.
