Spreading Wintergreen, Gaultheria procumbens, is a creeping, rhizomatous shrublet growing to 6 inches in height with scalloped or bristly toothed, glossy, dark green leaves that turn reddish at the onset of cold weather. The foliage has a strong wintergreen scent when crushed. Urn-shaped white or pale pink flowers appear in summer and mature to aromatic, edible, scarlet berries that often persists into the following spring.
This native of eastern North America is suitable for woodland plantings, rock gardens, or heather gardens. It looks great around boulders and the garden pond and is also very nice in containers.
Spreading Wintergeen grows best in acidic to neutral, peaty, moist soil in partial shade. The plants will tolerate full sun if soil is consistently moist.
