Additional Information About Vinca major 'Wojo's Gem' - Wojo's Gem Variegated Periwinkle

More About Wojo's Gem Periwinkle...

Vinca major 'Variegata' (sometimes commonly called large periwinkle, bigleaf periwinkle, greater periwinkle or blue buttons) is an evergreen, prostrate, mat-forming plant with long trailing stems that is widely used as a ground cover and container plant. North of USDA Zone 7, it is more commonly used as a container plant.

The large 3" long leaves of 'Wojo's Gem' are ovate to lanceolate and have outstanding variegation of white leaves with green edges. Tubular, phlox-like, violet blue flowers that are 2" across bloom in the leaf axils in spring, and usually continue to bloom intermittently throughout the summer into fall. Trailing stems root at the nodes as they go along the ground and quickly spread to form an attractive ground cover. Dense foliage may grow up to 14” tall.

Reliably winter hardy in USDA Zones 7-9, Bigleaf Periwinkle can be grown in average, dry to medium to moist, well-drained soils in full sun to part shade. In hotter climates it prefers shade in the afternoon hours. Space 8” apart for quick cover of smaller areas. Space 12-18” apart to cover large areas.

Aside from its ability to form a quick groundcover in partially shaded environments, Wojo's Gem Periwinkle also works well to light up shady areas in hanging baskets, window boxes, and other containers. When used as a groundcover, bulbs and other deciduous perennials will pop right through in spring. Because the vines form roots as they go it is also very effective on slopes or banks to stabilize soils and prevent erosion.
