Additional Information About Arachniodes simplicior 'Variegata' - East Indian Holly Fern

Arachniodes Simplicior 'Variegata' is a moderate growing perennial plant that can be grown in USDA Plant Hardiness Zones 7A through 9B. It prefers growing in a location that provides shade and grows best when planted in loam, clay or silt soil that is well drained or moderately drained. The foliage is yellow in color. It attracts visual attention and is resistant to deer, insects, diseases and heat.

East Indian Holly Fern can be useful in the landscape in mass plantings, in foundation plantings, in containers or planters, as a border or edger, around decks, swimming pools, and other outdoor living areas, as an accent, under a shade tree, in landscape beds or islands, to accentuate entryways or in small groupings and also in theme gardens or shade gardens.

More About East Indian Holly Fern...

The East Indian Holly Fern, Arachniodes simplicior 'Variegata'', is a beaitful evergreen fern with unusually glossy, variegated, fine-textured, open fronds. Each dark green frond has a prominent wide streak of yellow running down the center.

East Indian Holly Fern is an exceptionally easy to grow perennial fern provided the soil is acidic and humusy and the environment is a shady one. Morning sun with afternoon shade is okay. If the soil is heavy clay or dense make sure to mix in a good amount of compost or humus to the soil removed from the planting hole.

East Indian Holly Fern is very low maintenance. It requires very little if any pruning, only to removed a damaged frond and during cleanup at the end of winter. We suggest a feeding with a mild organic fertilizer after new growth has emerged in spring and soil sulfur for deep greening of foliage.

East Indian Holly fern can be grown in garden beds or containers. In garden beds it can be useful as an accent, as a border, in patches, or mass planted as a groundcover. Excellent for woodland gardens and other naturalistic sites where humus has accumulated over an extended period. It combines nicely with Heucheras, Hosta Lilies, and other shade-loving perennials and is excellent for use in cut flower arrangements.
