Easy to grow, great for housing and feeding birds in winter, excellent for cutting to add to fall floral displays, Callicarpa is a must-have plant!
Noteworthy Characteristics
The Issai Beautyberry is a sight to behold. It is a beautiful shrub producung pretty pink flowers in late spring or early summer that are followed by abundant clusters of sparkling, pearl-like, purple berries that nearly cover the gracefully arching branches. The multi-stemmed shrub has a bushy, mounding habit of growth to 4 to 5 feet height with an equal spread and attractive, narrow, emerald green leaves throughout the season that turn to gold and purple in fall.
Uses
It's natural look makes Issai a good selection as a specimen, in groups or as a natural hedge in partially shaded woodland borders or landcape beds. It's a great addition to bird gardens and the branches with berries are a great addition to floral arrangements.
Culture & Care Tips
Plant Issai Beautyberry in locations that full sun to partial shade. It prefers to grow in average to moist conditions, and shouldn't be allowed to dry out. It is not particular as to soil type or pH. It is highly tolerant of urban pollution and will thrive well even in inner city environments. It can be pruned back to the ground in late winter or early spring as it blooms on new wood.
Received a mature, healthy plant in good condition. Planted early in the spring and in only a few months it is taking off like a weed here in zone 8b. Covered in small flowers and hoping for a good crop of berries. It hasn't been bothered by deer or pests so far.
