Additional Information About Italian Cypress - Cupressus sempervirens

Italian Cypress is a fast growing tree and cone bearing plant that can be grown in USDA Plant Hardiness Zones 7B through 10B. It matures to an average height of 40 feet to 50 feet and an average width of 2 feet to 3 feet, depending on climate and other environmental factors. It prefers growing in a location that provides full sun and grows best when planted in sand, loam, clay or silt soil that is well drained. The foliage is dark green in color. It attracts visual attention and is resistant to deer, drought, insects, diseases, mildew and heat.

Italian Cypress can be useful in the landscape as a background, around decks, swimming pools, and other outdoor living areas, as an accent, for topiary, in landscape beds or islands, to frame the corners of a home or other building, grown flat against a wall, to accentuate entryways or in medians and also in theme gardens.

More about the Italian Cypress...

Noteworthy Characteristics

The Italian Cypress has erect branches forming a very narrow columnar habit of growth. It is less than a tenth as wide as the tree is tall. It has an extremely unique form that provides a classic distinction for Mediterranean themed landscapes, tall screens and framing accents. The foliage grows in dense sprays that are rich green in color. The individual leaves appear scale-like and are produced on rounded shoots.

Uses

The Italian Cypress is perfect for use to fill those narrow spaces in foundation plantings of taller homes and buildings of at least 20 feet in height. It also makes a quite attractive specimen or can be planted in a row to form a tall and narrow hedge. It also lends itself well to containers and spiral form topiary.

Culture

Plant Italian Cypress in very well-drained soils and full sun. No pruning required. Feed in spring with a well-balanced shrub and tree type fertilizer.
