Additional Information About Needlepoint Ivy

Hedera Helix 'Needlepoint' is a moderate growing vining plant, groundcover plant and perennial plant that can be grown in USDA Plant Hardiness Zones 5A through 10B. It matures to an average height of 1 inch to 1 foot and an average width of 1 foot to 3 feet, depending on climate and other environmental factors. It prefers growing in a location that provides full sun, shade, morning sun with afternoon shade, morning shade with afternoon sun or filtered sun and grows best when planted in clay or silt soil that is well drained. The foliage is dark green in color.

Needlepoint Ivy can be useful in the landscape in mass plantings, in foundation plantings, in containers or planters, as a border or edger, in shrub borders, around decks, swimming pools, and other outdoor living areas, under a shade tree, as a groundcover, for topiary or in hanging baskets and also in shade gardens.

More About Needlepoint Ivy...

Needlepoint Ivy is perfect for hanging baskets or other containers, or as a groundcover or as a clinging vine for a stone or brick wall. After a year or two of setting down roots, it will become vigorous in its spread. Spread of a single plant will easily reach six or eight feet, though it is quite easily kept smaller. Needlepoint varieties are also called Birdsfoot, Birdfoot, or Bird's Foot Ivy, because the leaf shape resembles tracks left by chickens.

It will climb trees to at least six feet and eventually if opportunity arises and contrary to pupular belief, will do the trees little to no harm. Aereal roots do not really penetrate bark and are not causing injury. A potential for blocking light occurs only if the vines spead to the outer edges of the limbs, which needlepoint is not inclined to do.

Needlepoint Ivy is sometimes called "Pot Ivy" because it does so well in containers. It is even one of the varieties recommended as best for topiary purposes because of its leaf density and for being trainable over shaped wire frameworks, responding favorably to skillful pruning. As a very low-growing creeping vine it is even recommended as an alternative to lawns, though of course not the sort of lawn, but not one kids play on.

Needlepoint Ivy is very easy to grow and maintain with the right conditions. It will flourish in most garden soils, including heavy clay, but prefers well-drained fertile soils that are not too alkaline and do not stay constantly soggy or wet. Any time of year you can trim to shape when growth gets excessive and tie in to encourage climbing up trellises. It will survive heavy shade or full sun, however prefers some afternoon shade in hotter climates. Like all varieties of English Ivy it is deer resistant because of it's mild toxicity to them.

The ivy arrived on time and pretty much in good shape. I needed it for a specific customer planting job. The color is good and it is now beginning to take root and fill out. The only problem I encountered was that we lost one plant. Not sure why as it was watered, etc. the as all the rest of them, but I am sure that it happens as we are working with living things.
