More About Waterlily Star Magnolia...

Noteworthy Characteristics

Magnolia stellata 'Waterlily' is an ideal accent tree for smaller home landscapes featuring loads of stunning, extremely fragrant, star-shaped, shell-pink flowers fading to white in early spring. Each flower produces up to 36 petals and are less floppy than M. stellata, resulting in a waterlily-like appearance, hence the name. Before the leaves emerge, the flowers open from rose color buds that are perched at almost ever stem tip. It has dark green foliage throughout the season that turns from yellow to coppery-bronze in fall.

Uses

Makes for a very outstanding solitary specimen or addition to a flowering shrub border. Can also be used in groups and is suitable for planting under power lines.

Culture

Very easy to grow and maintain, Betty Magnolia prefers full sun for best flowering however will tolerate some partial shade. In the South, some shade during the heat of mid-summer days will be appreciated. Not picky about soil type, Waterlily prefers evenly moist but well-drained acidic soils for optimal growth. Constantly soggy or wet soils are problematic. This is a relatively low maintenance tree, and should only be pruned after flowering to avoid removing any of the current season's flowers. In our gardens the deer haven't touched this tree.
