Additional Information About Homestead Purple Hardy Verbena

Verbena Canadensis 'Homestead Purple' is a fast growing groundcover plant and perennial plant that can be grown in USDA Plant Hardiness Zones 6B through 9B. It matures to an average height of 1 inch to 1 foot and an average width of 3 feet to 4 feet, depending on climate and other environmental factors. It prefers growing in a location that provides full sun and grows best when planted in sand, loam, clay or silt soil that is well drained. In the spring, summer and fall Homestead Purple Verbena produces purple flowers. The foliage is dark green in color. It attracts butterflies, hummingbirds and visual attention and is resistant to deer, drought, insects and heat.

Homestead Purple Verbena can be useful in the landscape along woodland borders, in mass plantings, in containers or planters, as a border or edger, around decks, swimming pools, and other outdoor living areas, as a groundcover, in hanging baskets, in landscape beds or islands, for erosion control or in small groupings and also in rock or xeriscape gardens, cottage gardens, butterfly gardens or perennial gardens.

More About Homestead Purple Verbena...

In our trial gardens here in USDA Zone 8 of mid-Georgia, 'Homestead Purple' has proven over the past two decades to be the most hardy and fastest growing of all perennial Verbena. In fact, during most winters it remains evergreen. It is hardy as far north as Zone 6B!

Leave plenty of room for this low-growing, fast spreading plant as Homestead Purple can easily grow 6 feet wide or more in just a season or two. The handsome dark green foliage becomes completely covered with vibrant purple flowers as early in spring as March and then repeatedly flowers until the first heavy frost in late fall or early winter.

Homestead Purple is a great choice in mass or in patches on slopes and embankments or as a border or groundcover in garden beds. We tend to use it in patches rather than in mass because it can go dormant and lose its leaves in colder winters.

Plant in very well-drained soils and plenty of sunshine. Some shade will be tolerated but flowering won't be as heavy. COnstantly wet or soggy soils can be a problem so ensure that the soil is well-drained. Maintenance is minimal. Can be sheared during mid-summer to promote heavier flowering and again in late winter before new growth or flower buds begin to emerge.

Plants appeared healthy on arrival but no buds or blooms. They have been planted where I have other verbena that has done well. We shall see how they do.
