Noteworthy Characteristics
An evergreen shrub native to Malaysia and islands of the western Pacific, Mammy Croton is a brilliantly colored, smaller growing variety. The star-shaped flowers are produced on long stalks but are insignificant. It's the brightly-hued foliage that steals the show. Mammy’s leaves are linear with blunt, rounded tips, arranged spirally around the stems with a slight corkscrew twist around the midrib. The new leaves emerge light green with streaks and splotches of yellow and then mature to green, red, orange and yellow overlaid with bright red.
Uses
Where hardy outdoors, Mammy Croton is useful as a colorful accent or specimen shrub or filler in beds or borders, as a hedge, or in containers. Where not winter hardy, it can be used outdoors as an annual in beds or as a container plant that can be overwintered indoors or in a greenhouse when low temperatures drop below 55 degrees. It also makes a great year round house plant.
