Hydrangea Paniculata 'Renhy' is a moderate growing shrub and perennial plant that can be grown in USDA Plant Hardiness Zones 4A through 9B. It matures to an average height of 6 feet to 8 feet and an average width of 4 feet to 6 feet, depending on climate and other environmental factors. It prefers growing in a location that provides morning sun with afternoon shade or filtered sun and grows best when planted in loam or clay soil that is well drained. In the summer and fall Vanilla Strawberry Hydrangea produces pink, cream, white, rose pink and light green flowers. The foliage is medium green in color. It attracts butterflies and visual attention and is resistant to insects, diseases, mildew and heat.
Vanilla Strawberry Hydrangea can be useful in the landscape along woodland borders, in foundation plantings, as a background, around decks, swimming pools, and other outdoor living areas, as an accent, under a shade tree, in landscape beds or islands or in small groupings and also in theme gardens, cottage gardens, perennial gardens or shade gardens.
Noteworthy Characteristics
Voted top plant of 2010 by the American Nursery and Landscape Association, Hydrangea paniculata Vanilla Strawberry™ is a relative of the classic PeeGee Hydrangea that produces large flower heads starting in early to mid-summer. The flowers emerge a creamy white turning pink and then strawberry red, or even burgundy, later in the season with the cooler night temperatures. Since new flower heads continue opening into late summer, plants can display all three color stages at any one time, making for quite a color show. The blooms are held atop red stems, which contrast nicely against the green leaves.
Uses
Useful as a single specimen, in small groupings or as an accent shrub or small tree in home foundation plantings or landscape beds. Aslo great for , flowering shrub borders, colorful natural hedges, and cottage gardens.
