Additional Information About Purple Smoke Baptisia - False Indigo

More About Baptisia 'Purple Smoke'...

A recent introduction from the North Carolina Botanical Garden, this exciting hybrid offers great potential as a specimen plant in the garden. Long spikes of smoky violet-blue and purple flowers held on black, sturdy stems rise above the bushy mound of grey-green foliage during spring. A good substitute for Lupines, in areas where they are difficult to grow. Makes an excellent cut-flower, and is also attractive to butterflies. Drought tolerant, once established. Plants may be increased by dividing in spring, every 4 to 5 years.

If you have deer (like I have), these plants are absolutely gorgeous! The flowers in Spring are just beautiful, and the shape this plant takes is just fabulous. I love the pedal leaves and the mounding of the top of this bush. I want MORE!
