Illumination Flame is a moderate growing perennial plant that can be grown in USDA Plant Hardiness Zones 8A through 11. It matures to an average height of 2 feet to 3 feet and an average width of 1 foot to 2 feet, depending on climate and other environmental factors. It prefers growing in a location that provides full sun, morning sun with afternoon shade or morning shade with afternoon sun and grows best when planted in loam, clay or silt soil that is well drained. In the spring, summer and fall Illumination Flame produces yellow, pink and orange flowers. The foliage is dark green in color. It attracts butterflies, hummingbirds and visual attention and is resistant to deer and heat.
Illumination Flame can be useful in the landscape along woodland borders, in containers or planters, as a border or edger, around decks, swimming pools, and other outdoor living areas, as a focal point, in landscape beds or islands or in small groupings and also in cottage gardens or perennial gardens.
I have hesitated to write a review because the plant was damaged in shipping. I can see where it left the nursery in good order, but the leaves were smashed together. I carefully planted it in my garden, ever hopeful, but the bottom leaves keep shriveling with a brown curl and dying. I was so excited to include this in my garden.
Hi Coleen - It's a rare occurrence, however we are always sorry to hear when a plant has been damaged in shipping. Please let us know if the Digiplex doesn't make it and we'll get you another one shipped out. This is a new plant introduction so we're testing it in our own gardens. So far, here in mid Georgia, we've found that this plant performs best in humus-rich, well-drained but moist soils and some shade or dappled light during the hottest part of the day. Ours are doing great so far, however we're waiting to see performance here throughout the hotter summer months, which usually take a toll on Digitials (Foxglove). Not sure how much sun it will take there in Washington? Anyhow, we had to move ours from a full sun location to a partially shaded location in the garden.
