Rhododendron Hybrid 'Autumn Amethyst™ Conlee P P #10567' is a moderate growing shrub that can be grown in USDA Plant Hardiness Zones 6A through 10B. It matures to an average height of 5 feet to 5 feet and an average width of 4 feet to 6 feet, depending on climate and other environmental factors. It prefers growing in a location that provides morning sun with afternoon shade or filtered sun and grows best when planted in loam or clay soil that is well drained or moderately drained. In the spring, summer and fall Autumn Amethyst Encore Azalea produces purple flowers. The foliage is medium green in color. It attracts visual attention and is resistant to diseases, mildew and heat.

Autumn Amethyst Encore Azalea can be useful in the landscape along woodland borders, in mass plantings, in foundation plantings, as a background, in shrub borders, around decks, swimming pools, and other outdoor living areas, as an accent, under a shade tree, in landscape beds or islands or to accentuate entryways and also in rock or xeriscape gardens, theme gardens, cottage gardens, perennial gardens or shade gardens.

Noteworthy Characteristics

With its dark pinkish-purple flowers produced in spring and fall, lustrous green summer foliage and attractive purple winter foliage, Autumn Amethyst™, offers vibrant year round color to any garden. Preliminary university trials have shown it to be one of the most cold hardy varieties of the Encore Azalea line. Autumn Amethyst™ is one of the larger growing of the series to 4 feet tall with an equal spread.  USDA Zones 6A-9B.

Uses

Autumn Amethyst™ is of the larger growing varieties of Encore Azalea making it useful as a colorful flowering hedge, home foundation plant, or as a background to lower growing plants in sunny to partially shaded landscape beds. 

Culture & Care

Encore Azaleas prefer a an acid soil that contains plenty of organic matter and is well-drained. Encores will tolerate all-day full sun however will also tolerate some shade. Too much shade and flowering will be diminished. 5 hours or more of direct sun per day is recommended. A light pruning and feeding after the first bloom phase can help stimulate new growth and encourage heavier bud development.
