Additional Information About Crimson Pygmy Barberry - Berberis thunbergii 'Atropurpurea Nana'

Berberis Thunbergii 'Atropurpurea Nana / Crimson Pygmy' is a moderate growing shrub that can be grown in USDA Plant Hardiness Zones 4A through 8B. It matures to an average height of 2 feet to 3 feet and an average width of 2 feet to 3 feet, depending on climate and other environmental factors. It prefers growing in a location that provides full sun or morning shade with afternoon sun and grows best when planted in sand, loam, clay or silt soil that is well drained. In the spring Crimson Pygmy Barberry produces yellow flowers. The foliage is burgundy and red in color. It attracts visual attention and is resistant to deer, drought, insects, diseases and heat.

Crimson Pygmy Barberry can be useful in the landscape along woodland borders, in mass plantings, in foundation plantings, as a border or edger, in shrub borders, around decks, swimming pools, and other outdoor living areas, as an accent, in landscape beds or islands, for erosion control or to accentuate entryways and also in rock or xeriscape gardens, theme gardens or perennial gardens.

More About Crimson Pigmy Barberry...

'Crimson Pygmy' is a smaller, dwarf version of the original Red Barberry with the same exceptional drought tolerance and handsome dark, blood-red foliage throughout the wearm season. Fall foliage is a brighter red. It forms a neat, compact, mound in the garden to about 2 feet tall by about 3 feet wide at maturity.

It's low and mounding habit make Crimson Pygmy a perfect selection as a low-growing border or , since it loses it's leaves in winter, it can be planted behind low-growing junipers such as 'Blue Rug', 'Bar Harbor', or 'Green Mound'. The plant has little barbs on the branches so it also serves well as a low border that will deter the neighbors pets and their children if necessary:-)

Crimson Pygmy is very easy to grow and maintain. It prefers rocky or sandy well drained soils and full sun for the deepest foliage color. Keep soil damp during the first summer and then the plant will require little if any supplemental irrigation. Because it maintains a neat mounded shape on it's own and is exceptionally drought tolerant, it is very low maintenance.
