Noteworthy Characteristics
'Calisto' is a low-growing Indian Hawthorne that produces vibrant pink flowers in spring which are stunning against the backdrop of handsome, very deep green, significantly curled, evergreen leaves that are burgundy tinted when new and during the cool season, providing winter interest in the landscape. Plants form dense mounds to about 3 feet tall and 4 feet wide.
Uses
The dense, low and mounding form, and the hardiness, makes Calisto a perfect choice for foundation plantings or as a border or in groupings in sunny to partially shaded landscape beds and islands. It works very well planted in mass on slopes and embankments to control erosion and stays low enough to use as an underplanting for small to mid-size trees such as crape myrtle and Japanese maples.
Culture
Easy to grow and low maintenance, Calisto prefers very well-drained soils in full sun to part shade. Avoid planting in constantly wet or soggy soils as this promotes leaf spot. When established, plants are exceptionally drought and heat tolerant.
