Additional Information About Hot Lips Salvia

Salvia X Jamensis 'Hot Lips' is a moderate growing perennial plant that can be grown in USDA Plant Hardiness Zones 6A through 11. It matures to an average height of 3 feet to 4 feet and an average width of 1 foot to 2 feet, depending on climate and other environmental factors. It prefers growing in a location that provides full sun, morning sun with afternoon shade or morning shade with afternoon sun and grows best when planted in loam, clay or silt soil that is well drained or moderately drained. In the spring, summer and fall Hot Lips Salvia produces red and white flowers. The foliage is dark green in color. It attracts butterflies and visual attention and is resistant to deer, drought, insects and heat.

Hot Lips Salvia can be useful in the landscape in mass plantings, in containers or planters, around decks, swimming pools, and other outdoor living areas, in landscape beds or islands or in small groupings and also in cottage gardens, butterfly gardens, herb gardens or perennial gardens.

More About Hot Lips Salvia...

If you are looking for plants that are sure to attract the hummingbirds look no further - Hot Lips Salvia should be at or near the top of your list!

This selection of the Mexican Salvia was introduced by Richard Turner of California after the plant was shared with him by his maid, who brought it from her home in Mexico.

The fast-growing, 30" tall x 6' wide shrub is loaded with some of the most uniquely colored flowers of any plant. The stunning bicolor flowers of Hot Lips Salvia are white with red lips and are irresistible to hummingbirds. In our gardens here in USDA Zone 8 of mid-Georgia, flowers begin to appear in mid-spring and continue to the first hard frost in early winter.

A hardy perennial in USDA Zones 6-11,  Hot Lips Salvia can be grown in garden beds or containers. Above Zone 6 it will be an annual. It prefers a moist, well-drained soil and likes full sun to partial shade. Flowering will be heavier with more sun. It is more drought tolerant when growing in the ground. Plants in containers will require more attention to watering during the hot summer months.
