Helleborus X Hybridus 'Ballards Strain' is a moderate growing perennial plant that can be grown in USDA Plant Hardiness Zones 4A through 9B. It matures to an average height of 1 foot to 2 feet and an average width of 1 foot to 2 feet, depending on climate and other environmental factors. It prefers growing in a location that provides shade, morning sun with afternoon shade or filtered sun and grows best when planted in loam, clay or silt soil that is well drained. In the spring and winter Ballards Strain Helleborus produces yellow, pink, purple, red, dark purple and maroon flowers. The foliage is dark green in color. It attracts visual attention and is resistant to deer, insects, diseases and heat.
Ballards Strain Helleborus can be useful in the landscape along woodland borders, in mass plantings, in containers or planters, as a border or edger, under a shade tree, as a groundcover, in landscape beds or islands or in small groupings and also in theme gardens, cottage gardens, perennial gardens or shade gardens.
Ballards Strain Helleborus are evergreen, bushy, clump-forming perennials which typically grow 12-18" tall with a similar to slightly larger spread. Nodding, cup-shaped flowers (to 2" diameter) with overlapping petals and center crowns of conspicuously contrasting yellow stamens appear in clustersat the tips of leafy stems from February through April. Bloom period can be longer in mild winters.
