Variegated Creeping Fig is an enthusiastic climber able to rapidly scramble up brick, stone or stucco walls up to 3 to 4 stories tall. This vine coats surfaces with a tracery of fine stems that are densely covered with small, heart shaped, green leaves that are 1 inch long by about .75 in wide and edged in white. They are held closely to the surface creating a mat of foliage that extends barely 1 in from the surface.
Variegated Creeping Fig can be useful as a groundcover where it looks great scrambling over boulders but is most often used to climb and fully cover block, masonry, and concrete walls. Disney and the other theme parks make use of creeping fig to create "instant" topiary. Wire frameworks are created of geometric shapes, animals, and even famous cartoon characters. The frames are lined with spaghum moss and filled with growing medium. Creeping fig is planted in the frame which rapidly grows to cover the shape in a thin coat of fine-textured juvenile leaves.
Variegated Creeping Fig is not particular about soil. It's less aggressive and easier to manage when its grown in less fertile, drier soil. This vine will grow at seaside if protected behind dunes or buildings. It will tolerate full sun or shade however in the cooler regions where it will grow it should be planted on south or east walls to protect it from damage by winter winds.
It is quite drought tolerant when established however you'll need to provide it water during dry spells when young. Water when dry when young.
