Ajuga Reptans 'Blueberry Muffin' is a moderate growing groundcover plant and perennial plant that can be grown in USDA Plant Hardiness Zones 5A through 9B. It matures to an average height of 1 inch to 1 foot and an average width of 1 foot to 3 feet, depending on climate and other environmental factors. It prefers growing in a location that provides shade, morning sun with afternoon shade or filtered sun and grows best when planted in sand, loam, clay or silt soil that is well drained or moderately drained. In the spring Blueberry Muffin Ajuga produces blue and violet flowers. The foliage is light green and medium green in color. It attracts butterflies, hummingbirds and visual attention and is resistant to deer.
Blueberry Muffin Ajuga can be useful in the landscape along woodland borders, in mass plantings, in containers or planters, as a border or edger, in shrub borders, under a shade tree, as a groundcover, between stepping stones and pavers, as a lawn substitute or in landscape beds or islands and also in rock or xeriscape gardens, cottage gardens, butterfly gardens, hummingbird gardens, perennial gardens or shade gardens.
Blueberry Muffin is extremely vigorous small leaved Ajuga with dark new leaves and blueberry blue flowers that rise above the foliage on tall, eight inch spikes. Blueberry Muffin is a much faster and stronger grower than 'Chocolate Chip' Ajuga with leaves that are thicker and more weather resistant.
Its low habit make Blueberry Muffin perfect for planting between stepping stones, in wall crevices, around boulders, or in other small spaces in shady to partially shaded areas of the garden. It is also useful for erosion control on slopes.
This beautiful plant is very cold-hardy and grows just about anywhere; full sun or shade, preferring some afternoon shade in hotter climates of the South. It is adaptable to most soil types provided they are well-drained. A well-drained moist soil is preferable though it is quite tolerant of dry periods.
