Sedum Spurium 'Dragons Blood' is a moderate growing groundcover plant, perennial plant and succulent plant that can be grown in USDA Plant Hardiness Zones 4A through 9B. It matures to an average height of 1 inch to 1 foot and an average width of 1 foot to 2 feet, depending on climate and other environmental factors. It prefers growing in a location that provides full sun or morning shade with afternoon sun and grows best when planted in sand, loam, clay or silt soil that is well drained. In the summer Dragons Blood Sedum produces pink flowers. The foliage is burgundy and red in color. It attracts visual attention and is resistant to deer, drought, insects, diseases and heat.
Dragons Blood Sedum can be useful in the landscape in mass plantings, in containers or planters, as a border or edger, as a groundcover, between stepping stones and pavers, in hanging baskets, in landscape beds or islands or in small groupings and also in rock or xeriscape gardens, theme gardens or perennial gardens.
One from our 'Toe Tickler' collection, 'Dragon's Blood' is a low-growing, trailing variety of Sedum that produces brilliant, crimson-red flowers in mid to late summer. The small flowers are held in clusters above the foliage. The succulent leaves become a glowing orange-red color in fall. The more sun it gets, the more intense the color of the flowers and foliage.
Dragon's Blood Sedum is tolerant of dry, infertile soils and is useful in garden beds and rock gardens as a groundcover or border and will prevent erosion on sloped ground. It is also suitable for use in container gardens. It prefers full sun however will tolerate some shade, though foliage and flower colors won't be as intense in shadier situations.
If you have a spot in the garden that few plants will tolerate, and you like the color red, this tough ground cover plant may be just the thing for you!
