Additional Information About Irish Moss

Green Irish Moss is a moderate growing groundcover plant and perennial plant that can be grown in USDA Plant Hardiness Zones 3A through 10B. It matures to an average height of 1 inch to 1 foot and an average width of 1 foot to 2 feet, depending on climate and other environmental factors. It prefers growing in a location that provides shade, morning sun with afternoon shade or filtered sun and grows best when planted in sand, loam, clay or silt soil that is well drained or moderately drained. In the summer Green Irish Moss produces white flowers. The foliage is medium green and dark green in color. It attracts butterflies and visual attention and is resistant to deer, drought, insects, diseases, mildew and heat.

Green Irish Moss can be useful in the landscape along woodland borders, in mass plantings, in containers or planters, as a border or edger, around decks, swimming pools, and other outdoor living areas, under a shade tree, as a groundcover, between stepping stones and pavers, as a lawn substitute or in hanging baskets and also in cottage gardens, herb gardens or perennial gardens.

More About Irish Moss...

Irish Moss forms a lush, emerald green carpet of moss-like foliage with small, delicate, star-shape white flowers in midsummer. The foliage is evergreen. The flowers are held above the mat of foliage on short 2-4 inch stalks.

Irish Moss is just the moss-like ground cover you need for rock gardens and planting between stepping stones and pavers, and in rock gardens and other plantings where a soft-textured, cushion-like plant is needed. In cooler climates it is sometimes used as a lawn substitute in relatively small areas. It also works well as a lush green soil cover in container gardens.

Irish Moss is easy to grow and hardy enough for sunny or shady locations. Here in Zone 8 of Georgia we always provide it with some afternoon shade. It cannot tolerate much traffic or direct sunlight in the heat of the day in the Lower South.

However, I'm not doing very well with it. After doing more research, I really don't think this is going to work for me. I may take the surviving patches and put them in a container garden.
