Additional Information About 'Bonza' Hardy Eucalyptus

Eucalyptus Pauciflora 'Bonza' is a moderate growing tree that can be grown in USDA Plant Hardiness Zones 7B through 11. It matures to an average height of 20 feet to 40 feet and an average width of 15 feet to 30 feet, depending on climate and other environmental factors. It prefers growing in a location that provides full sun and grows best when planted in sand, loam, clay or silt soil that is well drained. The foliage is blue green, blue and grey / silver in color. It attracts visual attention and is resistant to deer, drought, insects, diseases, mildew and heat. If you like fragrance, Eucalyptus Pauciflora 'Bonza' has fragrant foliage.

'Bonza' Snow Gum Eucalyptus can be useful in the landscape as a buffer or screen, as a background, as a focal point, in landscape beds or islands or in small groupings and also in rock or xeriscape gardens.

Noteworthy Characteristics

Nicknamed 'Bonza' meaning "great" in its home in the coldest regions of Australia.  This (zone 6b and above) is a small to medium, patient growing Eucalyptus tree that should be a featured ornamental in your landscape.  Semi-pendulous evergreen leaves and stems take on distinctive burgundy highlights. Bonza produces white flowers in the summer. The trunk is artistically contorted; its bark is smooth with patterned white and grey patches. Size is easy to control and the tree responds well to pruning. All grown up, Bonza' can reach 40’. Bonza adapts well to any soil condition, is disease resistant, and long-lived.  'Bonza' grows all over the alpine regions of Eastern Australia and is highly rated for its cold hardiness.

 

 
USDA Hardiness Zones & Details: 6b-11

In McDonough, GA (zone 8A) a 10 month old 'Bonza' had minimal leaf damage after a winter where temps reached 6°.  In Atlanta, GA (zone 7B) a 10 month old tree that froze to the ground at 5°, has recovered nicely growing 6 – 8’ in that same year.

Soil: Rich, well-drained, slightly acidic (5.5 to 6.5 pH)
Water Needs: When young, water enough to keep soil moist during the first season. Therafter, provide supplemental water in the absence of rainfall.
