Cryptomeria Japonica 'Black Dragon' is a moderate growing shrub, tree and cone bearing plant that can be grown in USDA Plant Hardiness Zones 5A through 9B. It matures to an average height of 6 feet to 10 feet and an average width of 3 feet to 4 feet, depending on climate and other environmental factors. It prefers growing in a location that provides full sun, morning sun with afternoon shade or morning shade with afternoon sun and grows best when planted in loam, clay or silt soil that is well drained or moderately drained. The foliage is dark green in color. If you like fragrance, Cryptomeria Japonica 'Black Dragon' has fragrant foliage.
Black Dragon Japanese Cedar can be useful in the landscape along woodland borders, in foundation plantings, as a buffer or screen, in containers or planters, as a background, around decks, swimming pools, and other outdoor living areas, as a focal point, in landscape beds or islands, to frame the corners of a home or other building or to accentuate entryways and also in theme gardens.
Noteworthy Characteristics
Named for its dark green mature needles, Black Dragon Cryptomeria appears almost black in lower levels of light. New growth appears light green and stands out brilliantly against the older needles until it also darkens. This evergreen shrub or small tree has a thick, pyramidal growth habit and may reach heights of 6 to 10 feet with a spread of 4 to 6 feet, depending upon the suitability of its growing location. Although most of its trunk is hidden by needles, it sports orange to brown peeling bark.
Uses
Single Specimen, Groupings, Shrub Borders, Natural Hedge, Home Foundations, Slopes / Embankments, Espalier (grown flat against a wall), Containers
Culture
Black Dragon Cryptomeria thrives in full sunlight but will tolerate partial shade. Fast-draining soils with an acidic pH, below 7.0, promote the best growth. Strong winds, whether hot or cold, cause the branches and needles to dry out; therefore this evergreen is best planted in protected areas.
