Empress Wu Hosta is a fast growing perennial plant that can be grown in USDA Plant Hardiness Zones 3A through 9B. It matures to an average height of 3 feet to 4 feet and an average width of 4 feet to 6 feet, depending on climate and other environmental factors. It prefers growing in a location that provides shade, morning sun with afternoon shade or filtered sun and grows best when planted in loam, clay or silt soil that is well drained. In the summer Empress Wu Hosta produces lavender flowers. The foliage is dark green in color. It attracts hummingbirds and visual attention and is resistant to heat.
Empress Wu Hosta can be useful in the landscape along woodland borders, in foundation plantings, in containers or planters, around decks, swimming pools, and other outdoor living areas, as an accent, under a shade tree, in landscape beds or islands, to accentuate entryways or in small groupings and also in cottage gardens, perennial gardens or shade gardens.
Empress Wu is a GINORMOUS hosta lily! It is the largest hosta on the market...at least that we've ever seen...and we've seen a lot of hosta lilies. The extremely large clumps of foliage up to 9 feet wide and 4 feet high are comprised of equally extremely large leaves up to 18 inches across. The glossy leaves energe blue-green in spring and are topped with 5 foot stalks of light lavender flowers in summer. Anyone with some shade and enough space has got to have one of these impressive giants in their garden!
