Tall Mondo Grass is a moderate growing groundcover plant that can be grown in USDA Plant Hardiness Zones 6A through 10B. It prefers growing in a location that provides shade, morning sun with afternoon shade or filtered sun and grows best when planted in sand, loam, clay or silt soil that is well drained. The foliage is blue green and yellow in color. It attracts visual attention and is resistant to deer, drought, insects, diseases and heat.
Tall Mondo Grass can be useful in the landscape in mass plantings, in foundation plantings, in containers or planters, as a border or edger, around decks, swimming pools, and other outdoor living areas, as an accent, under a shade tree, as a groundcover, in hanging baskets or in landscape beds or islands and also in rock or xeriscape gardens, theme gardens, cottage gardens or shade gardens.
A first-class ground cover, Mondo Grass forms a lush carpet of very dark green grass-like foliage. It is similar in appearance to Big Blue Liriope but with much thinner blades that provide a softer texture. Mondo grass has 8- to 12-inch long strappy dark green leaves and short spikes of lilac flowers, but these aren't notable. Dense clumps reach 6 to 8 inches high about a foot wide. Mondo grass spreads by underground stems.
Mondo Grass is a perfect plant for medium to full shade conditions and is a great filler for containers and beds. It is a useful groundcover, especially under trees, and is ideal to use for bordering paths, in the front of borders, and in rock gardens.
Mondo grass likes part to full shade, and regular water, especially if planted under the canopies of large shade trees which tend to soak a lot of moisture from the soil. Mondo grass can be mowed or sheared in late winter before new growth beings in spring.
