Spartan Juniper is a fast growing tree and cone bearing plant that can be grown in USDA Plant Hardiness Zones 4A through 11. It matures to an average height of 15 feet to 20 feet and an average width of 6 feet to 10 feet, depending on climate and other environmental factors. It prefers growing in a location that provides full sun or morning shade with afternoon sun and grows best when planted in sand, loam, clay or silt soil that is well drained or moderately drained. The foliage is medium green and dark green in color. It attracts visual attention and is resistant to deer, drought, insects, diseases, mildew and heat.
Spartan Juniper can be useful in the landscape as a buffer or screen, as a background, around decks, swimming pools, and other outdoor living areas, for topiary, in landscape beds or islands, to frame the corners of a home or other building, to accentuate entryways or as a tree form shrub and also in theme gardens.
Noteworthy Characteristics
Spartan Juniper is a low-maintenance evergreen shrub with many uses in the home landscape. Formal in appearance, it is conical or pyramidal in shape with deep green, dense scale-like foliage. Because of its narrow width, this juniper can make a big impact on the landscape even when space is limited.
Uses
Excellent for use as a single specimen, in groups, visual screen plantings, sound buffer plantings, home foundations, corners and entryways, and asian theme gardens.
Culture
Spartan Juniper grows well in neutral to slightly acidic well-drained soil, including sandy soil locations. Full-sun locations are ideal, but Spartan does grow in partial shade. It is drought tolerant when established so seldom requires irrigation and declines if soil remains wet.
