Chamaecyparis Obtusa 'Wells Special' is a moderate growing tree and cone bearing plant that can be grown in USDA Plant Hardiness Zones 5A through 11. It matures to an average height of 12 feet to 20 feet and an average width of 4 feet to 8 feet, depending on climate and other environmental factors. It prefers growing in a location that provides full sun, morning sun with afternoon shade or morning shade with afternoon sun and grows best when planted in sand, loam, clay or silt soil that is well drained. The foliage is dark green in color. It attracts visual attention and is resistant to deer, drought, insects, diseases, mildew and heat. If you like fragrance, Chamaecyparis Obtusa 'Wells Special' has fragrant foliage.
Well's Special Hinoki False Cypress can be useful in the landscape in foundation plantings, as a buffer or screen, in containers or planters, as a background, as a focal point, in landscape beds or islands, to frame the corners of a home or other building, to add property value, as a hedge or in medians and also in rock or xeriscape gardens or theme gardens.
Noteworthy Characteristics
'Well's Special' is a narrow version of Hinoki cypress growing to about 15 feet in height with a spread of 6-7 feet. Its attractive emerald green foliage holds its color throughout the winter. It lends an extremely fine and delicate texture to the landscape composition which can make it a great focal point specimen on this basis alone. The shaggy indian red bark adds an interesting dimension to the landscape.

Culture & Care
Well's Special does best in full sun however will tolerate some shade or filtered sunlight. It prefers a moist, well-drained soil and will appreciate supplemental irrigation during extended droughts. It is highly tolerant of urban pollution and will even thrive in inner city environments. It is a relatively low maintenance tree. When pruning is necessary, it is recommended to only trim back the new growth of the current season, other than to remove any dieback. It has no significant negative characteristics.
