More about the Creeping Plum Yew...

NOTE:  So that those of you who are considering purchasing this plant from us will know what to expect when you receive and open the box, we took a picture of an average sized 1-gallon plant on our nursery and have posted it to the right. When fully rooted in a 1-gallon size container, this groundcover variety of plum yew is one that will never look as large and full, as do many of the other shrubs we ship...it's just the nature of the plant. Once planted in the ground, the creeping plum yew will grow much more dense, reaching a height of 18-24 inches and a width of 3 feet or so.

Noteworthy Characteristics

Creeping Plum Yew, Cephalotaxus harringtonia 'Prostrata', is an elegant plant with a spreading habit and attractive arching branches that are covered with glossy, flattened, very dark green needles which provide a very unique texture in the landscape. The "plum" in the name comes from the purple-red fruits that are produced on only the female plants.

Uses

Creeping Plum Yew is useful in small groups or mass plantings as a groundcover in landscape beds and foundation plantings. It looks especially nice around garden ponds and in shady rock gardens near boulders. It is also suitable for large containers and planters.

Culture & Care Tips

Creeping Plum Yew grows best in well-drained sandy soils but will adapt to any well-drained soil. Where climates are cool during summer it can be planted in full sun, but otherwise prefers some shade, preferably in the afternoon. It is very deer resistant plant.

When we were unable to find this plant locally, I went to the web and found Gardener direct. They had the plants and shipped them to us. They arrived in great shape, are planted and seem to be thriving. We will use this vendor again when we can't find a plant locally.

Reply from Gardener Direct:

Hi Robert - Thanks so much for the feedback. We're very glad to hear that the Creeping Yews arrived safely and that you are happy with them. Let us know if ever we can be of assistance in the future.

Fast shipping. Plants were well wrapped and protected. The individual plants were healthy, transplanted into beds with no loss in spite of a severe winter.

Disappointed

Misled about the size. Not very large. More like a quart, not a gallon. Plants appeared very healthy though and still look good. Hopefully they make it through the winter successfully.

Reply from Gardener Direct:

Hi George - Thanks for taking the time to provide a review. We're sorry to hear you were not pleased with the size of the Creeping Plum Yew but are happy to hear that you were pleased with the very healthy plant. Even when fully rooted in a 1-gallon size container, this groundcover variety of Cephalotaxus is one that will never look very "large" or full, as do many of the other plants we ship. It tends to spread horizontally and as a young plant just doesn't have that many branches. We could prune to make the plant appear fuller but this might destroy the natural form of the plant so we avoid doing so. That being said, once planted in the ground, the creeping yew will grow much more dense. During the first year or so after planting, just make sure to provide enough water to keep the soil moist, but not constantly soggy. The plants should root in well and do fine. In any event, we're glad you brought this issue up. So our customers who are considering purchasing this plant from us will know what to expect, we took a picture of an average sized 1-gallon plant on our nursery and have posted it to this page in the content section above. We are a very serious company run by nursery experts who have been in the field since 1984 and would never want anyone to think we would mislead them. We see enough of this going on with our "competitors' and it literally makes us sick. We want our customers to be happy when they open the box and, if not, we will do anything to try to make them happy. We're always at your service.
