Noteworthy Characteristics
Magnolia stellata 'Pink Stardust' is an outstanding addition to the stellata group. It is a vigorous growing, multi-stemed shrub or small tree with a pyrmidal form to 10 - 12' high and 8-10' wide that covers itself with spectacular rich pink buds that open to soft pink 4-5" flowers with almost twice as many petals as most other varieties. The heavy bud set and wonderful fragrance just add to its value in any landscape. It has dark green foliage throughout the season that turns from yellow to coppery-bronze in fall. An eye-catching specimen when in full bloom and a neat background tree year-round.
Uses
Makes for a very outstanding solitary specimen, as a background, or as an addition to a flowering shrub border. Can also be used in groups and is suitable for planting under power lines.
Culture
Very easy to grow and maintain, Pink Stardust magnolia prefers full sun for best flowering however will tolerate some partial shade. In the South, some shade during the heat of mid-summer days will be appreciated. Not picky about soil type, Pink Stardust prefers evenly moist but well-drained acidic soils for optimal growth. Constantly soggy or wet soils are problematic. This is a relatively low maintenance tree, and should only be pruned after flowering to avoid removing any of the current season's flowers. In our gardens the deer haven't touched this tree.
