Ivalace English Ivy, Hedera helix ’Ivalace’, is our personal favorite of all ivy varieties. It isn't nearly invasive as other varieties and will tolerate full sun or full shade. Small, dark green leaves have a crinkled effect which really adds a unique texture to the landscape. We use this one all over our gardens in various different ways. It makes an excellent low and slow spreading groundcover under the canopies of large trees, in landscape beds and to control erosion on slopes, and is also great for use to slowly climb brick, stone or wood walls, or to cascade over walls. It also makes an attractive addition to container gardens and hanging baskets where it will spill over the edges of pots. We have it growing up the mailbox post (pictured right) out front of our gardens since 1990 and the plant is still thriving to this day.
Ivalace Ivy is very easy to grow and maintain. It will flourish in most garden soils, including heavy clay, but prefers well-drained fertile soils that are not too alkaline and do not stay constantly soggy or wet. Any time of year you can trim vines to shape. It will survive heavy shade or full sun.
