Helleborus are one of our favorite perennials for the shade garden. For one, they're long-lived evergreens. Two, they produce their beautiful nodding flowers during winter, when not much else is blooming in our gardens. One of the Winter Jewel Series, 'Harlequin Gem' Hellebore features raspberry-red double flowers streaked in soft butter yellow with prominent soft yellow stamens. Trimming the old leaves to the ground in late winter before the buds emerge allows the flowers maximum impact.
