Penstemon X Digitalis 'Dark Towers' is a fast growing perennial plant that can be grown in USDA Plant Hardiness Zones 3A through 8B. It matures to an average height of 2 feet to 3 feet and an average width of 1 foot to 2 feet, depending on climate and other environmental factors. It prefers growing in a location that provides full sun, morning sun with afternoon shade or morning shade with afternoon sun and grows best when planted in sand, loam, clay or silt soil that is well drained. In the spring Dark Towers Penstemon produces light pink flowers. The foliage is burgundy in color. It attracts butterflies, hummingbirds and visual attention and is resistant to deer, drought, insects, diseases and heat.
Dark Towers Penstemon can be useful in the landscape along woodland borders, in containers or planters, around decks, swimming pools, and other outdoor living areas, in landscape beds or islands or in small groupings and also in cottage gardens, butterfly gardens, hummingbird gardens or perennial gardens.
Dark Towers is a show-off of a Penstemon that produces dark maroon foliage which provides a wonderful contrast to "towers" of soft-pink tubular flowers in loose terminal racemes atop erect, rigid, leafy stems. Butterflies and hummingbirds will flock to the flowers from late spring into summer. Foliage holds its color well throughout the summer.
