Buxus Sinica Var. Insularis 'Wintergreen' is a slow growing shrub that can be grown in USDA Plant Hardiness Zones 4A through 9B. It matures to an average height of 4 feet to 5 feet and an average width of 4 feet to 6 feet, depending on climate and other environmental factors. It prefers growing in a location that provides full sun, morning sun with afternoon shade or morning shade with afternoon sun and grows best when planted in loam or clay soil that is well drained. The foliage is blue green in color. It attracts visual attention and is resistant to deer, drought, insects, diseases and heat.
Wintergreen Boxwood can be useful in the landscape in foundation plantings, in containers or planters, around decks, swimming pools, and other outdoor living areas, as a focal point, in landscape beds or islands, to accentuate entryways, in small groupings or as a hedge and also in theme gardens.
Noteworthy Characteristics
Wintergreen Boxwood (Korean Boxwood) is an attractive evergreen shrub that is most often used as a hedge. It responds very well to shearing so is often selected as a foundation shrub, planted on either side of entryway for accentuation, or as a topiary in square, round, dome, or pyramidal form. If allowed to grow naturally to its mature size it will reach 5 feet or so in height with an equal spread.
Uses
Wintergreen Boxwood responds very well to shearing and therefore is often used as a hedge, foundation shrub, planted on either side of entryway for accentuation, or as a topiary in square, round, dome, or pyramidal form. It can also be useful as a single specimen, in groupings, shrub borders, natural hedge, or in large container gardens.
Culture & Care Tips
Wintergreen Boxwood is easy to grow in most any well-drained soils, planters or containers. 'Wintergreen' has better drought and pest tolerance than other boxwoods. Spring flowers are insignificant, though quite fragrant.
