Noteworthy Characteristics
Spring and fall bring masses of bright yellow flowers however you can expect flowering almost all year in Zones 9 and further south on this tropical shrub. The flowers are highly attractive to butterflies so it's an excellent selection for butterfly gardens. Thryallis is a very good candidate for low maintenance landscapes. It is very easy to grow, drought resistant, prefering dry, sandy soil. Its maximum height is about 6 feet though can be trimmed to a much lower height, making it a very versatile landscape plant.
Uses
Thryallis is one of the best tropical shrubs for shearing into low hedges. You can grow it underneath low windows in foundation planting where its thicket of stems discourage criminals and peeping toms. Also great as a background plant for perennial beds or massed as a large scale groundcover on slopes and embankments to prevent erosion. It is also does well in greenhouses and in containers that can be broguht indoors for the winter above Zone 9.
