Japanese Cleyera is a fast growing shrub and tree that can be grown in USDA Plant Hardiness Zones 7A through 10B. It prefers growing in a location that provides full sun, morning sun with afternoon shade or morning shade with afternoon sun and grows best when planted in loam or clay soil that is well drained or moderately drained. The foliage is red in color. It attracts visual attention and is resistant to deer, drought, insects, diseases and heat.
Japanese Cleyera can be useful in the landscape in foundation plantings, as a buffer or screen, as a background, in shrub borders, around decks, swimming pools, and other outdoor living areas, for topiary, as a focal point, in landscape beds or islands, to accentuate entryways or as a hedge and also in theme gardens.
Noteworthy Characteristics
Japanese Cleyera is a fast-growing, large shrub or small tree that features attractive, glossy evergreen foliage. The colorful new growth produced throughout the season emerges in shades of burgundy, orange and red. Cleyera is an excellent substitute for the disease-prone Red Tip Photinia.
Uses
Cleyera is useful in the landscape as an informal hedge, as a corner plant in foundation plantings, or as a background in landscape beds and islands. When lower branches are removed, Cleyera makes an outstanding tree form specimen in the landscape.
Culture & Care Tips
Plant the Japanese Cleyera in a location that provides well-drained soil and full sun to part shade. Does not require pruning however can be pruned for shaping or to tree form.
A fabulous little evergreen addition and the depth of colour is wonderful. Planning on trimming to create a topiary. Happy with the purchase and would buy again.
Thanks Peggy! We look forward to meeting your garden needs. Enjoy!
Plant arrived quickly and looks very healthy. It's been planted for about 6 weeks and so far its doing very well.
Dark, glossy leaves. Plants arrived healthy. They seem to tolerate more shade than I had expected.
I've only just received this plant, but it seems to be very happy, and I am excited to see it grow. It was received in excellent condition and just looks beautiful.
I will continue to visit the site and order from them.
Love the plants. They were pruned not too well. They'll grow. Two of the root balls collapsed as I was planting them and became one gallon root balls rather then three gallon. I've never seen such a large plant with such a small root ball. I inundated them with vitamin B and they look fine so far.
